I've been taking the last week or so to just relax and get my things together before I move to Illinois for a new photo internship at the Peoria Journal Star. That means I've been doing a lot of packing and shooting film. The focus on my LC-A+ is temperamental (or I just suck at estimating the distance from my subjects). Either way, I'm getting there.

As pretentious as it may sound, when I'm not working for the paper, I prefer to shoot film. The limitations of using a 35mm toy camera are kind of freeing; I don't have the need to chimp and check my exposure, and I'm far more choosy about what I want shoot. Plus, there's the added bonus that they are compact and lightweight. I can throw one in my purse and not worry about damaging anything.

The only downside of most of my toy cameras is that they are at very narrow fixed apertures. We're talking f/11-f/16 all the time. I wanted something a little more versatile for some projects I've been mulling over, and the Minitar 32mm f/2.8 of the LC-A+ seemed perfect. I can have the size and spontaneity that I get with a toy camera, plus a killer lens. Sounds sweet to me.

I need to spend more time with it to get the focusing down (like a Holga, you adjust by estimating the distance from a subject), but I think it's going to be my new favorite camera.

These were all shot on Lomography color negative 100 film, which lent an interesting blue cast to the roll.

Like I said...I need some practice.

I rediscovered a Holga photo I never posted. My lens broke after I took this first photo, so the rest of the roll was depressing and blurry. I was at Alum Creek Beach in a sudden downpour when I took this one, hence the foggy lens.

I also had some film developed from my juice box camera and then completely forgot about it until I found it on my desktop today.

Dresden used to be home to much of the tourism of Longaberger Baskets, but since the main headquarters moved, several storefronts have been left empty. After being let go from Longaberger, Dresden residents have found success starting their own businesses (non-basket-related, of course).

Back in December (!) I got a diptych camera for Christmas called the "Double Shot". I just now developed the film because it takes twice the number of pictures that come to your roll of film...and I really confused Walgreens when I dropped it off. It was impossible to plan out the pairs, so it was fun to see what I ended up with. Anyway, here are a few favorites!

My poor Holga. I've dropped it so many times that the focus ring is stuck and the back has a tendency to fall off. It's gotten to the point that no amount of gaffer's tape can control the light leaks, but I think it's endearing (if a camera can be endearing).

Picture Story: Reading Reflections #3

More than anything, Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird has taught me the importance of flexibility.

When making a picture story, you have characters, a story arc, and an ending, just like a text story would. Sometimes you get so set on how you want to tell the story that you lose sight of the real story that is unfolding in front of you. Don't avoid taking a certain picture just because it doesn't fit into your ideal little narrative. If you set out to tell a happy story then realize there's tragedy beneath the surface, it's your job to capture that, otherwise you're being unfair to your subject.

You also need to be open to the opinions of others, because sometimes you're not the best editor. A fresh set of eyes can see story arcs that you never would have seen or considered. The in-class editing session that we had for our one day stories was sososo helpful. I didn't even think about putting the girl standing alone as the first image; I had always arranged it near the end. Your opinion matters the most in the end, after all, it is your story, but you should always keep an open mind.

My goal for my one day story was not to cover the typical progression of a high school dance. I wanted my photos to convey the mood/feel of being in a social situation during high school. It's awkward, exciting, and painful, and while you're experiencing it, it's the most important thing in the world.

For the past three weeks, the students of Mizzou secluded themselves in a dark room to watch Pictures of the Year International. I watched the entirety of the judging for the freelance/enterprise feature picture story category, and I wouldn't hesitate to call the winners refreshing. The stories still contain a certain darkness, but they are nowhere as bleak as past winners have been. The top three winners are little slices of life from Chernobyl, Afghanistan and Georgia, and the award of excellence went to a quirky story about bike culture.

As young photojournalist, it's easy to convince myself that a story needs tragedy to be powerful, but that's not the case at all. Beautiful, sensitive photos can make a difference, angst or no angst. After the winners had been decided, the judges approached my friends and I in the back to ask us what we thought of their choices. After stumbling over my words for a few seconds because I couldn't believe such esteemed photojournalists would want my opinion, I told them how pleased I was to see such a different assortment of stories.

Selecting a Subject -Jay and Hurn

I found Jay and Hurn's take on selecting a subject to be extremely helpful. Is it visual? Is it practical? Is it something that I know enough about? Is it interesting to others? These are questions I need to think about when I brainstorm story ideas. Usually when I'm thinking about ideas, I psych myself out with the words "it's been done before." The thing is, it's all been done before. What I need to realize that if I find a subject that means something to me, then I can shoot it in a way that makes it different.

What struck me the most about this reading is how a story develops. I get easily discouraged when a story doesn't seem to be shaping up immediately, but what I need to realize is that it takes time. Getting access to a story can sometimes even take more time than it does to shoot it. It takes patience!

Seriously, things are getting too hip on this here blog. I've been hoarding some film from Impossible Project and am just getting around to posting it. It's pretty temperamental film and the colors really vary from frame to frame. I'd shoot some more of it if it weren't so pricey. Yeesh.
