Lomo LC-A+

As pretentious as it may sound, when I'm not working for the paper, I prefer to shoot film. The limitations of using a 35mm toy camera are kind of freeing; I don't have the need to chimp and check my exposure, and I'm far more choosy about what I want shoot. Plus, there's the added bonus that they are compact and lightweight. I can throw one in my purse and not worry about damaging anything. 


The only downside of most of my toy cameras is that they are at very narrow fixed apertures. We're talking f/11-f/16 all the time. I wanted something a little more versatile for some projects I've been mulling over, and the Minitar 32mm f/2.8 of the LC-A+ seemed perfect. I can have the size and spontaneity that I get with a toy camera, plus a killer lens. Sounds sweet to me. 


I need to spend more time with it to get the focusing down (like a Holga, you adjust by estimating the distance from a subject), but I think it's going to be my new favorite camera. 


These were all shot on Lomography color negative 100 film, which lent an interesting blue cast to the roll. 

  

Like I said...I need some practice. 

All Growed Up

Took my little brother's senior photos today. The weirdest part was realizing that we actually look alike.

Sports

Desperately seeking a vision. Took a few technically decent shots with my new 70-200mm of my little brother and dad playing catch, but nothing spoke to me (preferably a photo would've popped out said "sweet"). Of course my favorite of the evening is just a detail.

MO River Flooding

I'm back in St. Joseph for a few weeks before I head to Ohio to begin my internship at The Columbus Dispatch. I went out with my grandparents to celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary and we stopped by the river to check out the flooding. Turns out we weren't the only ones.

Christmas Morning

It never fails. My 17-year-old brother always wakes the entire family up at the crack of dawn to open presents. We complain at first, but it's always lovely.

My best friend/favorite Jew/soulmate, Eve, came for Christmas as well. It was her first Christmas morning experience and I think she was a little tired. 

I feel very greatly loved. I hope everyone else had a wonderful holiday as well. 

I'm Thankful For...

 ...family, friends, turkey, cats, and wide apertures. Oh, and you, too!

We probably just should've eaten Rupert instead of a turkey.

First Time for Everything.

I've been 21 for nearly a year now, and I've never been to a bar in my hometown of St. Joseph. My friend Andy and I went to the Felix Street Pub for a couple of drinks and some really terrible jukebox music. There was also a thong and a stuffed fish on the same wall. And you know what? It wasn't awful. Of course, I'm not over my new lens yet, and bar lights offered all kinds of obnoxious bokeh opportunities.

Not So Terrible Two's

I had lunch with my friend Meghan and her little daughter, Ayden, today. Last time I saw Ayden, she didn't have any hair! Now she's talking, walking, and knocking plates off tables. 

Darling. I wish I got to see these ladies more.

Mary+Jeremy

I had the pleasure of shooting some engagement photos for Mary and Jeremy, and I am so glad they went along with some of my crazy ideas. As you can see, Mary was wearing a beautiful white dress, and I asked her to trudge through waist length grass. I think the photos were worth it though! Still editing, but here's what I have so far.

This was my third shoot with Jackson, who's almost 2 years old now. At this rate, I'll be taking his senior photos! He was a little grumpy, but I got some good faces.

Geometrically Speaking: Zach's Senior Photos

This was my first portrait job of a male, and it also happened to be my first job in the snow. It was one of the most challenging portrait shoots I've done because of the conditions, so I think I am going to close shop for the winter.

I noticed that my choice in backgrounds tended to involve lots of lines and quadrilaterals. I think on some level I was trying to make the photos a little more masculine...I can't exactly just stick a boy next to some graffiti that says "you are beautiful" like I've done with female clients.

So, basically...I hope he likes the results!
